Fragments- Summer Homework
For my summer homework I was assigned to take photos inspired by the title 'Fragments'. I decided to use a human subject for my pictures and use different materials like glass, paper, etc to create the illusion of different fragments of a person's face. This is the Pinterest board I created as inspiration for my photos:

For this final edit I cut out the facial features from two different photos and stuck them onto red card to create a picture with fragments of the persons face.
WWW: I edited the photos well in photoshop by increasing the brightness and contrast which also made the photo look sharper
EBI: My unedited photos were very dark because my ISO and aperture were wrong, so next time I will make sure they are right before taking pictures.

Target-Consider my ISO, aperture and shutter speed before taking the photo so my photos come out brighter and sharper.
Patrick Cornillet
Cornillet is a painter, not a photographer. In this series, he has painted architectural elements isolated from their environment and reconstituted in the form of objects on a white background. The concrete makes us aware of the material and of the remains left by the humans and of time passing by.Even if the architectures seem austere, spaces seeming uninhabited, dehumanised, Cornillet creates a particular poetry and a mesmerising mysticism.
In response to Cornillet's work I took photos around school of buildings and structures that might usually be ignored and edited the photos in photoshop to remove the building from the background.
Here is my response:

Mauren Brodbeck
The buildings and car parks in Mauren Brodbeck’s photographs do not register in the thoughts of passersby. They are so unimposing that their existence seems almost doubtful. We pay so little attention to them that we can’t recall what they look like, they leave a mental blank. Mauren Brodbeck registers this secret to memory and changes it into a visual moment representing space and time. In my response I took photos of typically boring buildings so I could edit in the style of Mauren Brodbeck. Here is my response:

Facades- Anastasia Savinova
In this task I was required to take pictures inspired by Anastasia Savinova. Savinova's work requires her to go to multiple areas and capture the character and spirit of the place. Each of her photos are composed of numerous photographs that are true and authentic to a certain area. Here is some of her work:
In response to Anastasia Savinova I walked around my neighbourhood and photographed different facades. I got photos of many different houses at different angles so I could edit them together like Savinova. Here is my response:

Chris Killip photographed people in the North of England. He takes photos so he could show lives of those affected by the economic shift throughout the 1970s and 80s. This made him one of the most influential figures of British photography. This exhibition documents more than 140 works and serves as the most comprehensive account of his photos to date. Killip lived with the communities he pictured resulting in very intimate photos. He understood how they lived and how to present it correctly in his photos. He witnessed the togetherness of communities and the industries that sustained them.
This exhibition values and documents the lives of those affected by the economic shift but still sustained a sense of community.
Here are some examples of his work:

Independant Development- Laurence Demaison
For my half term homework I decided to take photos inspired by Laurence Demaison. She takes photos of her subject underwater to distort their faces. This links to my fragment topics because we can only see some parts of the face. For my photos I had my subject scream and blow bubbles under the water to create bubble on the water to distort the face. The water had a ripple effect and had strange effects on the face, for example it made it look swollen. I also used different lighting in my response to further distort the photo. Here are some examples of her work:

WWW: The photographs I took suited the theme of fragments because the water distorts the subject to the point where you can only see certain elements of their face clearly. Furthermore, in some of the pictures the subject blew bubbles which reflected fragments of the subjects face.
EBI: I could have taken photos that were zoomed into certain elements of the models face for example her eyes, nose, etc.

Development Two
For my second development I continued to create work inspired by Laurence Demaison using water in images to distort the subject. However, I wanted to explore different ways of using water so used droplets. To do this I used sellotape and water to mirror the subjects face in small droplets of water. To do this I sprayed a piece of tape with water and put the tape between two chairs. The subject then lay down under the tape which meant her face was shown in the droplets. Here is my response:
Best Edit:
WWW: The face was successfully reflected in the water as well as in the background of the tape
EBI: The focus of the photo was not sharp enough so the face in the droplets is not very clear

Development Three:
For my second development I wanted to take more photos like I did for my half term homework. To develop my work I took photos of more than just the face so I could capture fragments of the subjects body too. Moreover, I wanted to use different angles of the face to focus on different details of it. To do this I put the subject in a bath of not just water but also milk so the focus is on nothing but the subject. The white background of the milk not only makes the subject stand out but also makes the picture look less like it was taken in water and adds an element of mystery to the photo. Here is my response:

WWW: In my edits I used the black and white filter and also used a gradient map to bring out the different shades in the picture. This brought out the darker black tones and the whites which adds more contrast to the photo
EBI: I took photos of other parts of the body

Development Four:
For my third development, I continued to use a milk bath to photograph my subject in but added more elements for example fake flowers, glitter, different coloured lighting, etc. I also took my photos from different angle and got the model to do different poses so I could capture her face in different ways. I also started to take more photos of some other features of the model like her hair to explore other parts of her body. Here is my response:

Development Five
For my final development I wanted to make sure to focus on not just the model's face but to get lots of photos of her other body parts. So, for this development I used the same idea by putting my model in a bath but this time got photos of her stomach, shoulders, back, etc. However, as well as this,I still kept to taking photos of her face too but tried to get different angles to before. I then edited them in photoshop using the black and white filter, gradient map and changing the darkness levels to eccentuate the different tones in the photo. This darkened elements of her face like her lips drastically and made those fragments of her face stand out in the picture against the pale background. Here is my response:

WWW: In this last development I managed to capture lots of elements of the model which meant I could present different fragments of her body, not just her face.
EBI: the heat from the bath steamed up my camera lens at points so I couldn't get a sharp photo so next time I would make sure the bath is colder.

Final Piece- Daniele buetti
For my final piece I wanted to edit my photos using inspiration from Daniele Buetti. Buetti is a visual artist who explores many different elements of media including photography. In his work he perforates his photos covering them with points of light so they appear to shine from within. I chose this editing style for my pictures as it seems that fragments of light are glowing through the picture. Here are some examples of his work:
Process:
To edit my final piece I pierced holes into the photos to make different patterns, for example I outlined my subjects face with the dots. I also presented different emotions through the pattern, such as sadness by making it look like the subject could be crying. I used blu tack and a needle to pierce through the page as shown in the photos below:
Here are all the pierced photos before I put them in front of the light:
Then, I held up the pictures in front of a studio light and photographed them with the light shining through. Here are my photos infront of the light before I edited them.
Final Edits:
Finally, I edited the pictures of the photos in front of the light. I first cropped the photos to remove the border on the picture and then adjusted the levels on photoshop and increased the white level so the light was more prominent. Here are my final edits:
WWW: I successfully used the editing style of Daniele Buetti and created patterns in the photos by piercing holes into them. The light shone through the pictures and created an illusion that the subject in the picture was glowing. Furthermore, it added another element of fragments as there were specks of light scattered around the photo.
EBI: The photo quality wasn't as good printed out as when I had only edited it on photoshop so the photos looked slightly grainy.

Is there a deeper meaning to your work?
My pictures cast light upon standard body parts and highlights the beauty of the human figure. The specks of light transform an ordinary image into an abstract portrayal of the human body. It glorifies the physical elements of people and reflects that beauty can be manifested in even the most ordinary of body parts. Furthermore, the photos portray the complex nature to humans and the light in people below the surface.
