Christmas task
Laura Letinsky is a visual artist who is well know for her photographs of the aftermath of a meal or a snack where the half eaten chocolate bars and pieces of cake are her subjects. She arranges her subjects in the way that they will have naturally been left by the person eating the food. Her pieces explore "the problem of the illusion of perfection" meaning lots of time and energy are put into making a meal look and taste nice and in the end it all juts ends up as crumbs and stains on the table. This is an example of her work:
Task one:
To take theses photos inspired by Letinsky's work I gathered plates of food and arranged them as if I had been eating a snack.I. then took a series of pictures to show the process of eating a meal.
Best Edit
Task two
Letinsky arranges her subjects in multiple positions one of them being where the food, glasses, cutlery, etc are positioned at the very edge of the table to create a sense of urgency and stress that the subjects are going to fall off the table. To take these photos I placed wine glasses, wine bottles and plates of food at the very edges of the table so make it seem that they will all fall off.
My response:

WWW: I succeeded in creating a scene of the aftermath of a meal and arranged the subjects in the natural way that they would have been left in.
EBI:Arrange the objects more over the edge of the table.

Form over Function
Andre Kertesz
This image was created in 1928 and at this time Kertesz was living in Paris. This image is deliberately simple and Kertesz is paying attention to the photograph's composition emphasising the fork's geometry and form. The fork becomes more than just a kitchen utensil, Kertesz believed photography should reveal the real nature of things.
Whilst in Paris, Kertesz felt like an outsider and he expressed this loneliness through the subjects of his photographs. He was able to combine formal composition with an emotive charge.Henri Cartier Bresson said "Each time Kertesz's shutter clicks I hear his heart beating." Bresson meant that Kertesz puts his whole heart and soul into these pictures and feels like the pictures he takes are part of himself.1`4

Set one
The aim of this task was to take photos of ordinary kitchen utensils and turn it into something more than just a fork for example. This task is inspired by Andre Kertesz's famous photo 'Fork'.

Set 2
What did you learn from the first set which informed the second set?
Over the course of time of taking the first set of images I gradually learned what angles to use to reflect shadows that really emphasised the composition of the objects. This helped me to develop my sense of framing while using new objects to take pictures.

Ordinary to extraordinary: Edward Weston
Edward Weston
Edward Weston took this photo of the pepper in 1930 using a Graflex camera. The benefit of this camera is that it allowed him to see the subject matter while taking the photo.Weston's philosophy of photography was to bring out the beauty in photography. He was the master of composition and was very precise when framing something. When taking the photo of the pepper he ran into a problem; he couldn't get the right aputure to get the pepper all in focus. He created a smaller aputure and added it to the camera, this aputure was the size of a pin hole. The lighting was natural and he used a 4-6 hour exposure. The sun moved while the image was being taken so the pepper was lit from both sides and long exposure meant that the pepper was given a luminous glow.
Set One: Natural light
These pieces of work is inspired by Edward Weston. To take these photos I used natural lighting and vegetables such as cabbage, peppers, shallots, etc. I put the vegetables out on a plain background and took pictures at different points and angles to capture the shapes and textures of the details of the subjects.

WWW: The natural lighting enhanced all the textures of the subjects and created an interesting picture where you can focus on the formation and composition of the shape.
EBI: I used more interesting angles so you can see different parts of the subject that you wouldn't normally see to make it look less like a vegetable and more like something abnormal.

Artificial light
For these pieces of work I will use artificial light and a lower exposure to create the effect that the subjects are coming out of the dark.In the last task I learned that I should have taken the images from lots of different angles to make a variety of interesting pictures, so I made sure to do that in this task.

David Hockney
David Hockney is connected to the pop art movement. This movement was interested in responding to popular culture. Hockney created photo joiners that consisted of photographs taken of the same object from different perspectives. The images were then collaged together to recreate the place, person or object even though the overall appearance may look distorted. This work connects with the Cubist movement, one of Hockney's major aims. For example this is one of his photomontages it was taken on the Pear-blossom highway, from the 11th to the 18th of April 1986. To achieve this photo he went out and took images of road signs, the floor, the sky and many other things. He then developed all of them and arranged the to create a dessert road scene. This photo had around 200 different images for the sky alone.

These are two pieces of cubist work the first is called, The Desk and was made in 1984 by David Hockney. The second is called, Still Life with Chair Caning it was made in 1912 by Pablo Picasso. David Hockney's photo was inspired by Picasso by was done using lots of images of the desk from different angles collaged together. Where as Picasso made his by drawing the scene from every angle all in one picture. Although they were using the same idea for their images they turned out quite different. For example in Hockney's interpretation you can tell what it is although it is a bit distorted. However in Picasso's interpretation its harder to tell whats what.
Object
For this photo I was inspired by David Hockney's chair photo.I took 9 photos from different parts of the chair and edited them together using photoshop.
WWW:I was able to create a photo merge of a chair using photo shop

Portraits
For this task I was inspired by David Hockney's portraits.I took 3 different groups of photos:sitting down, standing up and zoomed out.
WWW:I managed to stay quite still when taking the photos, so they merged together a lot better than the chair pictures

Homework: Hockney room
This homework was inspired by David Hockney. To create these images I took multiple photos of different angles of one wall in a room and merged them together into a collage on photoshop.

Eating Sequence
In this task I took a series of photos showing the steps in a eating a piece of food.I took a bite out of the food and took a photo each time until the piece of food was finished.I used an apple and a biscuit for these pictures.
Apple Collage
To create this collage I edited the photos I took of the eating sequence in photoshop by removing the background of the photos and making the background white. Then I copied all the photos onto a document on photoshop to create this collage.
WWW: I successfully made a collage that demonstrated each stage of eating an apple
EBI:There was a bigger difference in the apple throughout each photo

Homework:Luke Stephenson
For this task I was inspired by Luke Stephenson to take a photo of every crisp in a crisp packet and create a gif of these pictures to show the difference between each individual crisp.
WWW:I got a good focus and exposure on each of these photos which meant they were very sharp images
EBI:I did not have a tripod so it was very hard to keep the camera in the right place for every image which meant that the gif does not flow as well as it would with a tripod.

Francesca Woodman-independent development
For my independent development I am revisiting the work of Francesca Woodman. She takes pictures using a slow shutter speed to create ghost like figures and an eery atmosphere.I will incorporate domestic objects and spaces into her style of photo by using rooms in a house like the kitchen and bathroom and a model doing everyday things, for example cooking and cleaning.I will distort the moving figure in the picture using a slow shutter speed to create a sinister sense to the photos.
About Francesca Woodman:
Francesca Woodman is an American photographer who in her work likes to address issues like gender and self, representation of the body and disturbing psychological states. She used slow shutter speeds to distort her body in photos to show what is not seen. One example of her work is the picture below which she took in 1976, in this photo her body is blurry and you cant see her face and body clearly. In this piece of work she is considering disturbing psychological states, this is shown by using a distorted unfamiliar figure in an empty unknown setting which makes the viewer contemplate what the silhouette could be.This is an example of her work:
Final piece
WWW: I managed to incorperate domestic objects and spaces with francesca woodman's work well to create photos with an eery atmosphere but also which is set in a household.
